When Marcus Finally Got It

It’s detective work disguised as casual conversation.
Take Sarah, who came to me convinced she was “terrible at writing.” Through our conversations, I discovered she was a natural storyteller who could captivate her friends with detailed accounts of weekend adventures. She could organize complex narratives in her head but froze when facing a blank page. We started with voice recordings. Sarah would tell me her stories, then we’d transcribe them together, identifying the strong organizational structure already present in her thinking. Within weeks, she was drafting directly on paper, using her natural storytelling voice as her writing foundation.
This approach transforms the conversation from “What’s wrong with this student?” to “How does this student’s mind work?” Every learner has cognitive strengths. Our job is to find them and use them as bridges to new learning.
The Power of Strategic Scaffolding
Scaffolding gets misunderstood as “making things easier,” but effective scaffolding actually maintains high expectations while providing strategic support structures. Think of it like teaching someone to ride a bicycle. You don’t lower the bicycle or use training wheels forever. You run alongside, providing just enough support to prevent falling while the rider develops balance and confidence.
In my classroom, this looks like offering multiple ways to demonstrate understanding. During our geology unit, students could create a traditional written report, build a 3D model with explanatory labels, film a documentary-style explanation, or design an infographic. The learning target remained constant: explain how different types of rocks form and transform. The pathway to demonstrating that knowledge varied based on student strengths.
One of my most effective scaffolding strategies is the “expert partnership” system. I pair struggling learners not with the highest-achieving students, but with classmates who have complementary strengths. Jamie, who struggled with reading comprehension, partnered with Alex, who could decode text easily but had trouble making connections to real-world applications. Jamie’s strong analytical thinking helped Alex dive deeper into meaning, while Alex’s reading fluency gave Jamie access to more complex texts. Both students grew, and neither felt like they were receiving “help” in a way that highlighted deficits.
Creating Culture Where Struggle Is Learning
The most powerful shift happens when we normalize intellectual struggle as a natural part of learning. In classrooms where mistakes are treated as stepping stones rather than failures, students take more risks and recover more quickly from setbacks. This cultural change requires intentional modeling and language choices that reframe difficulty as growth opportunity.
I start each school year by sharing stories of famous “failures” who became innovators. We talk about how Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team and how J.K. Rowling’s first Harry Potter manuscript was rejected by twelve publishers. But more importantly, I model my own learning struggles. When I make calculation errors during math demonstrations or mispronounce scientific terms, I think aloud about my problem-solving process. Students see that learning is messy, even for teachers.
Language matters enormously in this work. Instead of saying “That’s wrong,” I say “That’s interesting thinking. Help me understand your reasoning.” When students say “I don’t get it,” I respond with “What part makes sense so far?” These small linguistic shifts signal that partial understanding is valuable and that confusion is the starting point for clarity, not evidence of inadequacy.
I also implement “mistake celebrations” where students share errors that led to insights. David discovered that his “wrong” answer about photosynthesis actually revealed a sophisticated understanding of energy transfer that we could build upon. These celebrations transform mistakes from sources of shame into learning assets.
Sustainable Support Systems
Supporting struggling learners requires systems that extend beyond individual teacher efforts. The most effective approaches involve collaboration between teachers, families, and support staff to create consistent messaging and strategies across all learning environments.
Regular communication with families focuses on strategies rather than deficits. Instead of sending home notes about missing assignments, I share specific techniques that worked in class. “Maya showed great understanding when we used color-coding for different types of math problems. You might try this approach with homework.” This positions families as partners in their child’s learning rather than enforcers of school expectations.
Professional learning communities within schools can share successful strategies for supporting diverse learners. When teachers collaborate to analyze student work and brainstorm alternative approaches, everyone’s toolkit expands. The quiet student who never participates in large group discussions might shine in small group settings. The student who struggles with traditional tests might excel with project-based assessments.
Building these support systems takes time and intentionality, but the results speak for themselves. Students develop confidence, take academic risks, and begin to see themselves as capable learners rather than struggling students who need fixing.
